Estelle Thompson
One of the most esteemed painters of her generation in Britain, Estelle Thompson’s articulations create a visual lexicon that is not only intellectually demanding, but sensitive and emotive as well. In her carefully structured works, Thompson combines a reductive technique with a complex use of color that calls to mind the works of Bridget Riley and the Op Art, and can be described as existing in "a purely painterly space". Midway between representation and abstraction, Thompson describes her work as located within the northern European landscape tradition. Her intricate and rhythmically varied articulations are a source of rich imagery and broad allusion.
Estelle Thompson was born 1960 and studied at the Royal College of Art 1983-1986. Thompson’s work has received numerous awards including the Prudential Award for the Arts, Arts Council Special Award, and Royal Overseas League Travel Award, and is in the collections of The British Museum, New York Public Library, Contemporary Art Society and British Council. She lives and works in London
