DE/CONSTRUCTING THE NORM

Angela de la Cruz

Inspired in equal parts by conceptual, painterly, and sculptural concerns, Angela de la Cruz utilizes the canvas to subvert traditional notions of painting, and extend the potential of narrative form. Aligning her work within the greater discourse of the history of art, de la Cruz defies the notion of a painting as a unique, singular object by deconstructing and reconstructing paintings into recyclable “Commodity Paintings”. Reinforced with titles such as “Ashamed”, “Off Guard”, or “Stuck”, her works are often physically and psychologically damaged. Her signature form of action painting — resulting in bashed-in and fractured stretchers, and crumpled, torn, or scorched canvases — serves to visualize the dramas their titles invoke, and anthropomorphize human emotions and experience.

Born in 1965 in La Coruna, Spain, Angela de la Cruz received her first university degree in philosophy at the Santiago de Compostela. She moved to London in 1989 and studied at Goldsmiths College and The Slade School of Art where she was awarded a Bachelor in Fine Art and Masters in Sculpture and Critical Theory respectively. She currently lives and works in London and is exhibited broadly throughout the world.

Clay Ketter

Clay Ketter’s work deals with labor and construction. Construction of the built environment we are surrounded by, and the inner reality that is mirrored in it. He is interested in our “homes” and the actual traces we leave behind us that tell about us and our history. There are no people in Clay Ketter’s work, but they are all about people. He shows us the norms we build and that we use to feel safe, e g in his computer manipulated city plans that result in perfectly symmetric layout of gated communities.

Fredrik Nielsen

Fredrik Nielsen (b. 1977) is the poster boy of cool rebellion, rocking an attitude that makes Swedish contemporary glass beat with a pulse. Stimulated by aspects of popular culture, Nielsen assimilates graffiti, music, videos and performance within his practice as a glass artist creating a form of kitsch that is continuously experimental. Improvisation has fueled his inspiration for pushing the material boundaries of glass beyond something banal and he is not afraid of taking risks to establish his own artistic license. Smooth surfaces and balanced form are sacrificed in place of sculptures that are rough around the edges and appear unfinished.

Many of his sculptures are embellished with statements that challenge the hierarchies within art and these concepts were expressed in an installation titled WannabeArt which was part of the exhibition Forms of Seduction at Wetterling Gallery, Stockholm in 2009. Some of the outspoken works featured were Fine Art Light (2008) and Svensk Form (2008), both critical reflections on Swedish aesthetic expectations. In June 2010, Nielsen utilized the performative aspects of the practice during a 10 day circus event titled, CATCH! at Kosta Boda. Nielsen’s flair for improvisation was put into action, fueling the direction of a sculpture which became more eccentric as the show progressed with acrobatics and live music. In the end, the sculpture represented a three dimensional expression of that evening’s energy. Through his ardent process of experimentation and colorful accessorization, Nielsen creates glass forms that completely destroy the ideas of standard normality. Instead, the unconventional emerges as a powerful statement and his attitude of rebellion becomes a refreshing break from tradition reaching out to alter viewer expectations.

Linda Bäckström

Working in the tradition of Pop Artists such as Claes Oldenburg and Andy Warhol, Linda Bäckström’s soft sculptures explore issues of power, status, and materiality. With a penchant for non-heroic, “anti-art” materials such as spray foam and aluminum, and a keen eye for cultural objects bemired in symbolic notions of power, Bäckström’s deeply tactile works create a rich interplay between association, meaning, and materials.

A keen observer of what lay beyond the glitter of constructed facades, Bäckström infuses humor, whimsy, and satire into often sober themes. While earlier works explored more personal thematic content including youth culture, teen ganging, and the human search for happiness, her recent work has shifted to the visual language contrived to drive American culture and the American Dream. Without value judgment, Bäckström explores the ways in which this multifaceted, multicultural nation goes about procuring consensus on a shared set of values and how these values, cultivated by the vast advertising and lobbying industries, find expression in visual symbols.

Bäckström describes her process as one involving intuition, chance and association. Scrupulously collecting images that catch her interest, Bäckström compiles her stores into a series of scrapbooks which serve as the starting point of her work. Bäckström’s spray foam sculptures are cast in hand-sewn textile moulds and assembled in a series of stages. Impossible to gauge and control the rate of expansion and drying process, her sculptures morph organically, thereby mastering their own identity and rejecting the artist’s total authority. Out of this unpredictability springs an authenticity that serves to open the stereotypes and allow for a variety of interpretations.

Mike + Doug Starn

Since the 1980s, Mike and Doug Starn’s conceptual approach to photography, and use of unorthodox techniques, has broadened notions of what is accepted as a photograph. In a signature manipulation of materials and form, the twin brothers apply innovative printing techniques, and a vast array of materials including transparency film, plexiglass, layered fused glass panels, gilded colored carbon prints, scotch tape, wax and pushpins, to create, and intensify, their metaphorical landscapes. With the theme of light as a central component of their work, the brothers explore the physical and philosophical interconnections between subjects such as leaves, trees, snowflakes, and religious icons, with human memory, perception and thought. Working collaboratively in photography since the age of thirteen, their innovative techniques, and unique combination of sculpture, painting, and video, have defied categorization, and earned them a position of eminence within the history of art.

Born in New Jersey, 1961, Mike and Doug Starn attended The School of The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Their work has been widely exhibited throughout the world, and represented in the collections of the Baltimore Museum of Art, Art Institute of Chicago, High Museum of Art, Atlanta, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, among many others. They live and work in Brooklyn, New York.

Nathalia Edenmont

Probing and provocative, the work of Natalia Edenmont explores popular culture through the medium of photography. Through the juxtaposition of opposing subjects and aesthetics, Edenmont’s work is rife with a characteristic tension as she explores themes including the deceptive nature of cultural norms, conformity, the repression of the individual, and double standards in western society.

With a strong embrace of symbolism, and clear references to historical genres of art, Edenmont’s artful, and frequently beautiful, arrangements can be viewed as a modern expression of traditional iconography.

Born in Yalta, Crimea, 1970, Nathalia Edenmont received her art education at Yalta Art School for Children, Yalta, Crimea, State Art School of Kiev, Kiev, Soviet Union, Simferopol State Art School, Simferopol, Crimea, and Forsberg’s International School of Design, Stockholm, Sweden.
Her work has been exhibited throughout Europe and the United States, and has been featured in publications including Bon Magazine, Sweden, Plaza Magzine, Sweden, Konstvärlden, Sweden and Photo International, Germany. In February 2014, Swedish public television released an one hour documentary about Edenmont and her work. Edenmont has resided in Sweden since 1991.
