Jane Hammond’s diverse oeuvre of paintings, collages, prints and digitally reworked photographs, provide a complex intersection between image, words, information, and iconography. Her embrace of multiplicity, and efforts to embody the scope of diversity within everyday life in her art, has aligned her work with key advances in contemporary literature. Although decades of Hammond’s earlier career were dedicated to the varied interpretation of 276 found images, the inception of recent works are informed more by language and the written word. Her well-known collaboration with the poet John Ashberry, in which she composed a large series of works based on forty-four titles he authored for the project, explore the interplay between language and image, and represent a theme which has become central to her work.
