Anna Pajak: [WG.Project 26] Ghost Flowers, Arrived Through Water

In her latest work Pajak has introduced organic forms into an imagery of abstract geometrical spaces. Her careful selection of colors and precise compositions are executed in a harmony derived from sacred geometry. With an intuitive process the work develops organically, where every new element is a proposition that determines the final result. She connects and infuse natural and abstracted forms with evocative visual and spiritual qualities. The black irises surrounded by orbs and architectural fragments is a recurring motive throughout the series. The flowers appear to descend from the sky or thrive from the ground. Surrounded by hovering orbs depicted against dark blue skies, the motives appear as visual enigmas. Investigating what can be seen as feminine in painting, Pajak draws inspiration from modernist masters such as Georgia O'Keeffe and Hilma af Klint.

“I almost always work in an associative way. In this body of work the black petals of the iris has been a way to stand in the line of other female painters. I see it as if the iris comes for a revisit, just like the women. This is a place where I can intertwine our practices and where painting can exist both in the past, present and future.”

Anna Pajak, born 1992, lives and works in Stockholm. She graduated with a MFA from The Royal Institute of Art, Stockholm in 2020. Anna Pajak has been exhibited at Stene Projects, Stockholm, Konsthallen Kvarnen, Dalarna, and at The Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts to name a few. She has been rewarded with grants from Queen Sonja Printmaking Award (2021) and Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts (2019 and 2020).
